Where Every Yard Becomes a Masterpiece

Seasonal Lawn Care For Your Properties

As a homeowner, you are concerned about the health of your lawn and participate in its upkeep every year. Due to time constraints or lack of expertise however, sometimes the requirements of its health and/or maintenance get beyond you. This is when advice from a turf specialist can come in handy.

Based upon the existing condition of your lawn, Duypreé will customize a long-term strategy for you which will allow you to achieve a lush, green turf or – if your lawn is already strong and healthy – to maintain it! As your professional lawn care partner, we offer both seasonal packages as well as individual services (which may be combined with seasonal packages) to supplement your current efforts.

Spring Leaf Clean-Up

After a long winter’s nap your lawn may be cluttered with debris and the remnants of the previous Summer’s grass. The first step in an annual maintenance routine is to remove this clutter so that your lawn can be prepared for new growth. As part of a Spring Clean-Up Duypreé will perform a quick raking to remove large debris such as twigs, branches, and litter. Once this is done, we will then inspect the thatch layer.

Thatch is a layer of organic matter made up of decaying grass, stems and roots that build up in between the lawn and the soil surface. It interferes with water infiltration, prevent air and nutrients from getting into the plant root, and can harbor harmful insects and diseases. Thatch also restricts Grassroots from growing into the soil root zone resulting in a shallow root lawn. It is a common problem with Kentucky Bluegrass Lawns that have been established for several years and have had and that have been over-watered and over-fertilized.

EXCESSIVE THATCH

We can quickly tell if your lawn has too much thatch on it, but how it feels when we walk on it. If it feels very spongy underfoot there is a buildup of thatch, which should be removed. Alternatively, we can cut a V-pattern in the lawn with the sharp knife and pull the turf away from the soil to assess the thickness of it. If the thatch layer in the cut sample measures a thickness of one inch or more there is too much fat in there it should be removed.

LAWN FERTILIZATION

Lawn fertilization is crucial for maintaining a lush, vibrant lawn. It involves applying nutrients to the soil to support healthy grass growth and development. Fertilizers typically contain a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—key nutrients that promote root development, flowering, and overall lawn health. Regular fertilization, tailored to your specific grass type and soil conditions, helps replenish essential nutrients that may be depleted over time. To further enhance soil structure and nutrient absorption, adding gypsum can help break up compacted soil, while Epsom salt provides magnesium and sulfur, which are essential for chlorophyll production and overall plant vitality. It’s important to follow a fertilization schedule, ideally during the growing season, to ensure your lawn receives the right nutrients when it needs them most. By integrating aeration, seeding, and fertilization into your lawn care routine, you can achieve a lush, healthy lawn that enhances your outdoor space.

SEEDING & OVER SEEDING

Seeding and overseeding are essential techniques for establishing new grass or revitalizing an existing lawn. Seeding involves planting new grass seeds in bare or damaged areas, while overseeding refers to spreading grass seeds over an existing lawn to improve density and introduce new grass varieties. Overseeding can help combat issues such as thinning grass, weeds, and pests, resulting in a fuller, healthier lawn. It's best to overseed during the cooler months of spring or fall when the soil is still warm, ensuring optimal seed germination and growth.

FALL CLEAN-UPS

As the leaves start to fall and colder weather approaches, it's crucial to prepare your property for the winter months ahead. Our fall clean-up services are designed to remove fallen leaves, debris, and clutter that can harm your lawn if left unattended. We rake, bag, and haul away leaves to ensure your yard remains tidy, promoting healthier turf for the coming spring. With Duypreé, your property will be ready to face the winter in pristine condition, helping to maintain its curb appeal year-round.

Dethatching is Essential Care for Thriving Lawns

Dethatching is an important lawn maintenance technique designed to remove the thick layer of thatch that accumulates on the soil surface over time. Thatch consists of dead grass, roots, and organic debris, which can inhibit water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil. This buildup can lead to a variety of lawn problems, including poor growth, pest infestations, and increased susceptibility to diseases. By dethatching your lawn, you promote better airflow and nutrient absorption, allowing your grass to thrive. Ideally performed in early spring or early fall, dethatching rejuvenates your lawn, helping it achieve a lush, healthy appearance and improving its overall resilience.

THATCH REMOVAL

Thatch can be removed manually, by means of hand raking, or mechanically, by use of a power rake, mechanical dethatching AKA vertical mowing or vertical cutting is much more vigorous process than hand raking and therefore more efficient and effective. High speed rotating brushes aggressively reach toward the soil, grasping the thatch and spitting it out behind them as the operative moves the lawn mower like a machine over your lawn. The loose debris is then quickly raked up and backed up for disposal.

Typically, we perform this procedure as a part of a spring cleanup, but it is equally effective in the fall, when the turf goes through its second phase of active growth. Minimizing thatch for the future in an industry ecosystem insects earthworms beneficial fungi and other microorganisms will break down thatch and aerate the soil naturally excessively watering over fertilizing with nitrogen and heavy uses of insecticides and fungicides however serve to decrease the population of soil organisms which keep the thatch levels down to keep them minimized that development therefore we encourage proper watering proper fertilization frequent mowing with a mulching type lawn mower.

AERATION

Aeration, like thatch removal, can be done manually using a garden fork or mechanically through the use of a core aerator. Manual aeration involves puncturing the soil with a fork to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the roots. However, mechanical aeration is far more vigorous and efficient. A core aerator machine pulls out small plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn, creating spaces for roots to grow deeper and stronger. As the machine is pushed across the lawn, these plugs are systematically ejected, leaving behind a network of holes that enhance the soil's ability to breathe and absorb essential nutrients.

This process is typically performed during the growing season, either in the spring or fall when the grass is actively growing. Aeration is crucial for breaking up compacted soil and reducing thatch buildup, allowing for better water infiltration and root development. While natural processes involving earthworms and microorganisms can aerate the soil over time, frequent mowing, overwatering, and excessive use of chemicals can lead to compaction and thatch accumulation. Therefore, regular aeration, combined with proper lawn care practices, ensures a healthy, resilient lawn.

SIGNS THAT YOU NEED TO AERATE YOUR LAWN:

The ground is hard and compacted.

(Do not roll your lawn)

Thatch is building up.

Water does not penetrate well.

Weeds such as prostrate knotweed and Clover are present.

QUALITY SODDING SERVICES TO ENHANCE YOUR PROPERTY

Sodding is another means of repairing a damaged lawn. Cut out dead or damaged areas to a depth of roughly 1.5 in. Rick the soil, add fertilizer and place the sod on top of the soil. Ensure that the side spoil contacted by stepping on the side or rolling it. For the best results, Sod should be watered within an hour of being laid. Water Sod frequently and make sure it does not dry out.

“Keep Sod Wet” until it is fully rooted. Newly Sodded areas will be rooted in 10 to 14 days.
